Sandia National Laboratories seeking an independent researcher to be part of several projects investigating the technical and economic performance of various biofuels production processes from biomass, with a focus on technologies that will enable next generation biofuels beyond cellulosic ethanol. The successful candidate will focus on the development of techno-economic models of various operational modalities that could exist in a cellulosic biorefinery based on current technologies and those enabled by the advances at the Joint Bioenergy Institute (JBEI) and the research community at large.  This researcher will be a key member of the team developing these models at JBEI.

Develop techno-economic models of cellulosic biorefineries.  Develop customized unit operations based on JBEI technologies to understand impact on cost and performance as compared to the current state-of-the-art; requires collaboration with other JBEI members. Conduct various ‘scenario maps’ of different configurations that could exist within a biorefinery, focused on multiple inputs and multiple outputs.

Carry out material and energy balances for multiple biorefinery configurations. Collect and analyze data and prepare results for publication in scientific journals and presentations at seminars. Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed.  Ensure that others could duplicate results. Develop optimization algorithms. Develop consolidated bioprocessing options for next-generation biorefineries.

Requires a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field. Also requires the ability to carry out systems level analysis of complex biochemical process streams. Experience using software such as ASPEN Plus and/or SuperPro, Familiarity with MS Office, and MS Excel. Familiarity with process design and techno-economic analysis. Ability to conduct independent experiments, maintain excellent records and manage complex data sets. Outstanding personal, verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated publication record, expertise in developing new software codes and experience in cellulosic biofuel.
