Cranfield University, in collaboration with United Utilities, has a four year EngD project available through the Stream Industrial Doctorate Centre (see www.stream-idc.net) to develop and evaluate novel Pervasive Computing applications for the water sector. Recent developments in the fields of IT and monitoring &  communication have opened up new possibilities to develop computing systems which enrich the  relationship between water management systems (treatment, supply, use etc.) and the human communities which interact with them (designers, engineers, operators, technicians, consumers, etc.).

 The research will be undertaken in two phases. The first phase will involve identification and assessment of what specific forms of pervasive computing application hold the greatest promise in the context of the UK water sector through a cross-business assessment of opportunities. This activity will make a central contribution to the sector’s ability to develop smart water systems in support of more sustainable water resource management. Phase II will comprise development and testing of three pervasive computing applications in the areas of (i) water use behaviour, (ii) water treatment, and (iii) asset management. Applications will be delivered as proof of concept demonstrators with limited trial versions being deployed to enable evaluation using a mixed methods approach incorporating traditional usability evaluation methodologies as well as Rapid Assessment techniques.

 This post offers a stimulating opportunity to work closely with the water sector on the next generation of computing applications to deliver more sustainable water management. Following an induction semester at Cranfield, the Research Engineer will be primarily located with the project sponsor, United Utilities. Candidates for this Research Engineer post should hold a first class or upper second class degree in a relevant field and ideally hold an MSc in a branch of Computing, Monitoring and Control, or the application of IT solutions in engineered systems. Some experience of the water or utilities sector is also desirable but not compulsory.  Funding Notes

Supported by EPSRC and an industrial sponsor, this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of £19,000 p.a. for the first two years of registration rising to £20,000 p.a. on successful transfer to the third year of the programme.
