The University of Pittsburgh’s Neurology Department is currently seeking a qualified lab technician. The research focus is on the mechanism of astrocyte-mediated neuroprotection as it relates to Parkinson’s disease (PD). The main focus of the position will be to take the lead role in transgenic mouse colony maintenance and tissue assessment. Administrative duties will include keeping environmental health and safety logs, ordering lab materials, monitoring inventories of lab supplies, and updating equipment service. General laboratory duties will include maintenance of non-disposable glassware and plasticware, making solutions, and managing chemical waste storage and disposal. Specialized laboratory duties will include bacterial colony manipulation, cDNA plasmid preparation and transfection, RNA purification and analysis, siRNA transfection, protein purification and analysis, immunohistochemistry on human and rodent tissues, immunocytochemistry of primary neuron and astrocyte cell cultures, neurotoxin and neurotrophic factor treatments of cell cultures, cell counting and viability assay performance, and maintaining primary and cell line cultures. Previous experience with transgenic mouse line maintenance is strongly preferred; experience with basic molecular biology and biochemistry techniques is preferred. The successful applicant will play a major role in the development of new lines of research in astrocyte neurobiology, particularly as they relate to PD, in a laboratory in the Pittsburgh Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. Education: Bachelor Degree, The applicant should have earned a Bachelor of Science degree from a reputable college or university, preferably with a major in Biology, Biochemistry, or Neuroscience (but other scientific disciplines will be considered). At least 2 years of laboratory experience, either during or (preferably) after college, is required. This experience should have been in a basic science molecular biology or neuroscience laboratory, and should have involved experience with any combination of the techniques listed above and, preferably, small animal handling.
