Cranfield University is seeking a highly-motivated graduate to undertake this exciting industry-led PhD project which will research intermittent failures in electronic systems. Intermittent failures or errors is one of the most frustrating problems in electronic systems to debug. They often occur sporadically and cannot easily be forced to occur at will. It is challenging to have the right equipment attached and active to monitor the failure when it occurs because you don’t know when that will be.
Investigations in the past have shown intermittent failures are a major cause of no-fault-found (NFF) in avionics systems. An investigation in the Royal Air Force showed a high level of expenditure on NFF with some 60,000 man-hours being attributed to nugatory maintenance activity on NFF.
This project will investigate the in-situ health monitoring approach to detect, characterize and locate intermittent failures in electronic systems.
The £10.5 million EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Through-life Engineering Services will provide world-class capability in the UK to enable industry to deliver high-value products with outstanding availability, predictability and reliability with the lowest life cycle cost. The core partners include Rolls-Royce plc, BAE Systems, MoD and Bombardier Transport. In addition, the Centre is also supported by seven industry partners and six Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTNs) and trade organisations.
The PhD researcher will study within the Centre and will be part of a larger team of other senior (post-doctoral) researchers. The successful applicant will work closely with the Centre’s core industrial partners.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a First or Second Class UK honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such electronics or aerospace engineering. Knowledge or experience and an MSc in a relevant subject are highly desirable.
Funding
*Supported by the EPSRC Centre, studentships will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £20,000 p.a. for three years. To be eligible for this funding applicants must have:
-
no restrictions on how long you can stay in the UK, i.e. no visa restrictions or have ‘settled status’, and
-
have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant and
-
not been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. (This does not apply to UK or EU nationals).
All EU nationals are eligible to receive a fees-only award if they do not have ‘settled status’ in the UK.
All non-EU nationals are very unlikely to be eligible for this funding under the Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations 1997.
