Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Manager for the Semiconductor Device Sciences Department for the Albuquerque facility.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

Department Description

The Semiconductor Device Sciences Department is a highly interactive world-class research organization within the Center for Physical, Chemical and Nanoscience at Sandia National Laboratories.  Research is centered on compound semiconductor physics and devices, with parallel complementary efforts in fundamental science and novel device technologies.  One of several current focus areas is gallium-nitride-based materials and devices, which have enormous short-and-long-term potential for Sandia's energy and national security missions.  Other ongoing efforts include: photovoltaics (including nanowire-based platforms), radiation effects and defect spectroscopy, ultraviolet optoelectronics, optical communications, and revolutionary device concepts involving, e.g., microcavity polaritons, quantum-dot-based single photon emitters, and intersubband heterostructure devices.  Presently, the department is the major participant in Sandia’s Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) for Solid-State Lighting Science, funded at $18M over five years and one of 46 such DOE-sponsored EFRCs around the country. 

The Department's research utilizes staff expertise in experimental and theoretical solid-state physics, state-of-the-art nanofabrication, and advanced materials and device characterization.  It partners closely with other organizations, including the Advanced Materials Sciences Department, other departments, and university collaborators throughout the world.  The Department makes use of state-of-the-art growth and microfabrication facilities associated with MESA (Sandia's $600M Microsystems and Engineering Sciences Applications Complex); scientific facilities at CINT (the joint Sandia and Los Alamos Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies); and staff laboratories with specialized characterization techniques (e.g., x-ray diffraction reciprocal space mapping, deep-level optical spectroscopy, and femtosecond optical spectroscopy).

The Department's current sources of funding are roughly: 1/3 DOE Basic Energy Sciences (BES), 1/3 internal LDRD (Laboratory-Directed Research and Development); and 1/3 DOE energy technology and national security programs.  The goals of the various programs range from improving our scientific understanding of basic materials and device phenomena, to exploring new device and nanostructure architectures for technological performance breakthroughs, to prototyping devices for energy and national security mission demonstrations.

Job Summary 

The Center is seeking a dynamic, creative, and passionate individual to lead the Department into its next phase of world-class scientific discovery and technological innovation.  This individual will be given considerable freedom and independence to realize his or her vision of what this next phase might be, but it should enable complementary activities in basic science and engineered technology.

In order to achieve his or her vision, the Manager will need to be successful in four areas of approximately equal weight:

1. Engagement with the Semiconductor Device Sciences Research Community.  The Manager must be intimately engaged with the relevant research community worldwide.  Relevant activities include: actively participating in international conferences, workshops and technology roadmapping; actively contributing to technical societies, journal editing, and/or conference organization; or authorship or co-authorship of review articles or books.

2. Program Development. The manager is expected to support staff in their own development of smaller programs, and to lead the development of new larger, multi-staff multi-departmental programs that define strategic future directions and ensure the long-term health of the Center.

3. Staff Nurturing and Recruiting.  The Manager is expected to actively coach and guide staff to achieve their best, and to help create an environment in which research, creativity, teamwork and personal satisfaction can flourish.  In addition, the Manager is expected to actively track and recruit excellent candidates for post-doctoral or staff positions.

4. Administration.  The Manager is expected to handle (or delegate to Center support staff) administrative responsibilities including budgeting, ES&H, committee service, and cross-organizational communications.

The Department Manager will report directly to the Senior Manager for Semiconductor and Optical Sciences.  This is a strong opportunity for a person with a keen interest in basic and applied science to be mentored by someone with passion for, and considerable experience in, science program development.

Required 

• PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials sciences, or related discipline.
• The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance.
