Job summary: The successful candidate is expected to do experimental research in the area of natural products. The candidates must have a Ph D degree (obtained 3 or more years ago) and relevant post-doctoral research experience in the field of analytical or organic chemistry and structural characterisation by NMR and MS. The candidate will join the Natural Products Line to develop the field of phytochemistry and/or food chemistry.
Job description: Applications are being sought for one Investigador Auxiliar/Assistant Researcher position in Natural Products chemistry at Centro de Química da Madeira, CQM (Madeira Chemistry Research Centre), Madeira Island , to integrate the Natural Products Line and to develop research work in the field of phytochemistry and/or food chemistry.
The Centro de Química da Madeira, CQM (Madeira Chemistry Research Centre. http://cqm.uma.pt), research unit supported by the Portuguese Research Foundation, FCT, since 2004, has a research staff of 15 Ph Ds and 8 Ph Ds students organized in two lines of research (the Natural Products line and the Materials line) and has ongoing research projects, representing a total amount of 1.8 M . Recently, CQM receive from FCT ca. of 0.5 M for the acquisition of a new NMR (installed this year) and a LCMSMS (under installation). The goal of the Natural Products research line is the establishment of capabilities in the aspects of analysis, characterization and evaluation of core components of foodstuffs, with special incidence in wine, and isolation, characterization and evaluation of bioactive components of aromatic/medicinal plants, some of them also used as food constituents. The analytical research will focused not only on the application but on the development of techniques and methodologies of chemical analysis of volatile and non-volatile compounds in food stuffs in order to characterize them and/or their processes of production and evolution. The same methods and techniques can be developed to establish chemotypes of botanical subspecies of the Macaronesian biodiversity and to identify and quantify the components of essential oils and extracts with the aim of developing selected species into renewable sources of marketable products such as pharmaceuticals, biocides, fine chemicals, fuels, foods, and supplements. Isolation and structural elucidation of bioactive compounds derived from plants, fungi or other organisms is another aspects in development in the line for which knowledge of techniques such as NMR and MS are core issues. These research activities will be expanded and reinforced through the contract of one Investigador Auxiliar' with expertise to carry out very high quality integrated and cross-disciplinary research programs to develop the field of of phytochemistry and/or food chemistry at CQM.
Contract conditions: The contract offered will have duration of up to 5 years, renewed yearly based on mutual agreement. The annual gross income, before taxes, will be 3,038.06 Euros x 14 months. Some support will be provided, including office and laboratory space, plus access to common research facilities namely to the recently installed 400 MHz NMR (Bruker Advance) and LCMSMS (Bruker Esquire 6000 under instalation).
Qualifications and experience: The candidates should have a Ph D in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacy or related fields and have a good track of publications in SCI journals and the ability to pursue an independent research career. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic and resourceful, independent, have good communication skills, show good working habits, and have the ability to integrate well in a multidisciplinary team with expertise in natural products chemistry and to contribute to bring together and strengthen the Natural Products Line and CQM. Additionally, the selected candidate should be also prepared to coordinate research projects, supervise post-graduate students and submit research proposals to the national and international programmes and to develop national and international collaborations. In this context, it is expected that the selected candidate will actively support the participation of Natural Products Line and CQM on the submission of research proposals to EC VII Framework Program .
How to apply: Applications should be submitted by e-mail only (Please include in the e-mail subject, the application reference, otherwise the candidate will be excluded) to: postdoctoralfellowuma.pt, with the following information :
-identification of the candidate;
- The names and contact details of 2 referees;
- A brief statement of the applicants present and future research interests.
