Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Post Doc Appointee for the Computational Shock and Multiphysics Department for the Albuquerque, NM facility.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

Sandia's Computational Shock & Multiphysics Department provides unique, state-of-the-art modeling and simulation capabilities using a variety of multiphysics discretization technologies to simulate high strain rate, magnetohydrodynamic, electromechanic and high energy density physics phenomena for the U.S. defense and energy programs. To accomplish this objective, we conduct an active program of research and development in computational shock physics and methods, produce high-performance application codes that address relevant issues important to the DOE, DoD, DHS, and other U.S. Government agencies, and support production use of our codes by our principal customers.

Implement a quantum mechanical description of electron motion in an existing electronic structure code.  The initial stages of this effort will involve the modeling of real-time dynamics of electrons with fixed ionic positions, and in later stages, the work would involve coupled motion of ions and electrons.  The goal of this project is an improved description of X-ray Thompson scattering based on time-dependent density functional theory.  You will have an opportunity to work with some of the world's fastest computers.  This cutting edge research has a potential lasting impact on Z-machine experimental design.

Ph.D. in Physics or Materials Science or similar discipline is required. Strong ability and desire to write computer code, debug, and test physics-based simulation codes. Familiarity with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and solid-state electronic structure theory. Evidence of good written and verbal communication skills and a proven record of success in independent research as evidenced through technical publications and reports. Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and to work effectively with others as part of a team. Desired skills include the ability to write Fortran and to work with large computer codes.  Experience using and coding DFT plane-wave codes such as VASP, quantum espresso or Ab-Init. Interest in high-energy density physics theory.
