The mission of this Invited Chair is to research and develop tools and platforms to POWER THE PEOPLE, by enhancing the choices and access of every end-user to energy management and production. The research topics within the scope of the Invited Chair are: distributed electricity generation, penetration of micro-generation, new energy sources, e-electricity digital infrastructure, virtual network for individual electricity consumers and producers and sustainable energy systems.

The Invited Chair is co-funded by WS Energia and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), it will be hosted at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) through its Physics Department and it has the status of “MIT Affiliate” within the MIT-Portugal Initiative.

IST is the leading Engineering Faculty in Portugal and it is included in the main worldwide R&D and education networks. It aims to give students and alumni the education and the knowledge tools to improve, to change and to shape society through science, technology, and entrepreneurship. Energy has been identified has one of the top strategic sectors for the future of IST.

The MIT Affiliate status inside the MIT Portugal Initiative includes access to the resources of the MIT Industrial Liaison Program: one industrial liaison officer at MIT, MIT knowledge database, MIT conferences and seminars, four to five individual meetings each year with MIT Professors relevant to the Affiliate, plus one seminar conducted by a MIT professor per year under a relevant theme for the Affiliate, with access to MIT theses and research papers of importance to the Affiliate.

WS Energia is an innovative company in Solar Energy with international presence and an ambitious R&D program with a budget above 2 M€ for the next years. Its mission is to be the number one in creating leading edge technology and know-how in the solar energy sector.

Responsibilities of the Invited Chair Holder
 Create a world-class R&D group to fulfill the mission of the Invited Chair;
 Coordinate and manage breakthrough R&D projects in WS Energia and IST;
 Deliver exceptional results in innovation and technology;
 Attract funds for self-proposed R&D projects;
 Promote networking and agreements with top international R&D and innovation institutions.
