Med-Pediatrics – Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh – (22001628)

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a qualified candidate for a Lab Manager staff position in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and the Pediatric Asthma Center. Laboratory roles include the processing of blood and small tissue samples, the design and implementation of experiments and studies with a focus on genetic, epigenetic, and transcriptomic analysis, and functional validation of candidate pathways using primary cell cultures at air-liquid interface and other similar approaches.

Skills required include blood and tissue harvesting, cell sorting, RNA and DNA extraction and quality control, sample preparation for RNA sequencing and DNA methylation, rt-PCR, cell cultures, Western blotting, ELISA, multiplex, agarose gel electrophoresis, fluorometry, flow cytometry, and other molecular biology techniques. Administrative roles will include managing laboratory personnel, hiring, training, and evaluating new personnel as needed, establishing, and managing job tasks, expectations, turnaround times, and priorities for laboratory staff.

This position will also be working to improve workflow and productivity, supervising laboratory technicians and other trainees on daily tasks, and troubleshooting as necessary to ensure project deadlines are met, managing laboratory supplies, expenditures, budget, and billing. In addition, they will be overseeing equipment and laboratory purchases and maintenance, ensuring compliance with regulations and laboratory procedures, as well as preparation and conduction of periodic laboratory inspection, and other similar tasks as needed.

There may also be some teaching and training of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students. Scientific roles will include supporting the division’s Principal Investigators in the preparation of NIH grant applications (budgets, justifications, and laboratory methods), working with clinical staff and core lab directors to plan and develop procedures, assess, and define scope of work, and establish protocols and budgets for the initiation of new studies.

This position will also be communicating with key stakeholders (principal investigators, center director, and division chief) regarding needs and progress of ongoing studies, and coordinating laboratory aspects of new and ongoing studies with clinical research coordinators, core and clinical laboratories, and other stakeholders.

This position will require flexibility with hours and may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.

Ph.D. preferred, equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

This position is located at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of Lawrenceville.

PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check will be required prior to the start of employment.

A current TB test will be required as a condition of employment.


A Master’s degree with at least 3 years previous experience, and in a relevant field of research, is required; Ph.D. preferred.

Equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Experience in high-quality RNA and DNA extraction from blood and different tissues, transcriptomic work including RNA-sequencing, and other molecular biology approaches such as cell cultures, cell sorting, and flow cytometry are all strongly preferred.
