Are you ready to make a meaningful impact on the initiatives that support the current and future missions of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) while gaining valuable professional experience and advancing your career? The National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP) offers paid internships designed for talented undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) pursuing degrees in science, engineering, technology, mathematics, and other disciplines that that align with NNSA’s missions.

As a NNSA-MSIIP Intern, you will:

Participate in world-class research and operations projects and activities across the NNSA enterprise. Build a strong foundation for careers in science, technology, mathematics, and policy. Apply your skills and knowledge to real-world challenges, gaining a competitive edge in your field. Establish connections with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) scientists and subject matter experts that promote long-term relationships between yourself, researchers, and other professionals in your field. Duration: The 2026-2027 cohort of MSIIP interns will begin on June 1, 2026, and end on August 21, 2026. Summer interns will be expected to commit to 40 hours of participation per week. Appointment extensions may be offered based on project availability and the candidate’s ability to continue meeting the program eligibility requirements.

Provisions

*Stipend – Undergraduate Students and Post-Associate’s – $750 per week – Post-Bachelor’s- $850 per week – Master’s Students – $950 per week – Post-Master’s – $1,050 per week – Doctoral Students and Postdoctoral – $1,150 per week

Additional provisions may include:

* In-Person/Hybrid Internships – Commuting Supplement – Housing Supplement (if relocating >50 miles from approved location) – Inbound-Outbound Travel (if relocating >50 miles from approved location) * Virtual Internships – Remote Participation Supplement * Travel: Travel to the hosting site for site visits, conferences, meetings, and other professional development activities may be approved during the appointment at the request of the mentor. Other requests will be considered by the NNSA-MSIIP Program Manager and approved on a case-by-case basis.

Location: Available opportunities may be at DOE and NNSA national laboratories across the United States, DOE/NNSA offices in Washington, DC, and NNSA field/site offices.

Qualifications You must meet the following conditions to be considered:

* Be a U.S. citizen at the time of application. * Be at least 18 years of age by June 1, 2026. * Have a minimum undergraduate or graduate cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale as of Spring/Summer 2025. * Be enrolled as a part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate student in a degree-seeking program during the Fall of 2025 at an accredited Minority Serving Institution that meets the statutory criteria for identification as a Minority Serving Institution by the Department of Education, included in the following list: orise.orau.gov/zintellect-files/files/2025-minority-serving-institution-designation-list.xlsx. AANAPISI – Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution ANNH – Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institution HBCU – Historically Black College or University HSI – Hispanic-serving institution NASNTI – Native American-serving nontribal institution PBI – Predominantly Black Institution TCU – Tribal College or University * Be able to commit to 12 weeks of participation during the Summer of 2026. Exceptions to the 12-week summer requirement may be considered on a case-by-case basis to accommodate the candidate’s academic schedule.

Students may apply for and are eligible to participate in the program multiple times during their undergraduate and graduate studies. However, there should not be an assumption or expectation of being selected for another internship.

To participate in the program, selected students must meet the following conditions:

* Be enrolled as a part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate student in a degree-seeking program during the Spring 2026 academic term at an accredited Minority Serving Institution (MSI) or have graduated from an accredited Minority Serving Institution during the Fall 2025 academic term. If selected, proof of enrollment or completion of degree requirements will be required by May 2026. Students graduating from an eligible Minority Serving Institution in the Fall of 2025, enrolled in an institution that is not a Minority Serving Institution during the Spring 2026 or later terms, are not eligible to participate in the program. * Have a cumulative minimum undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale at the end of the Fall 2025 academic term. If selected, verification of GPA will be required upon acceptance of the internship. Candidates who maintained a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale during the Spring/Summer of 2025 but dropped below a 3.00 GPA during the Fall of 2025 will have the opportunity to provide documentation to verify that their GPA is 3.00 or higher for the Spring of 2026 to remain eligible for the program. If proof is not submitted by May 2026, or a 3.00 GPA for Spring 2026 is not met, the candidate will be deemed ineligible for the program. Students on a quarter system will be required to provide proof that their GPA is above 3.00 for the Winter 2026 quarter to remain eligible for the program. * Have coverage under a health insurance plan before arriving at the appointment site and maintain coverage during the appointment. * Be available to participate for 12 weeks, full-time, during the Summer of 2026.
