Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:

An open position for a laboratory technician to support various cell biology experimental procedures in the lab. Our laboratory is located in the state-of-the-art Albert Sherman Center at UMMS in the Neurology department. Our research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegeneration, with a focus on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS (www.boscolab.com). Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to immortalized cell culture, including biochemical processing of cells and microscopy. Responsibilities may also include dissection of primary neurons from mouse embryos, animal (mouse) husbandry, tissue sectioning, staining, and microscopy.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Research Laboratory Technician I, performs a variety of specimen preparatory techniques, dry lab data collection, and routine laboratory maintenance. Research Lab Technician I, will be working with animals, bacteria, chemicals and biohazardous materials.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform a variety of laboratory experiments using both routine and special techniques and methods
  • Assist in more complex laboratory tasks
  • Collect, analyze, and process laboratory samples
  • Record results, organize data, and perform basic computations
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Comply with all safety and infection control standards
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to perform duties independently
  • Judgment and action skills required to solve commonly encountered problems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:

  • Prior experience with Cell culture and/or mouse work is perferred
  • BA or BS in biological or physical sciences, with prior laboratory experience.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Wet chemistry laboratory, and may require appropriate contact with biohazards, radionuclides, toxins, animals, and human specimens.
