We are seeking a Systems Engineer, specifically, a System-of-Systems (SoS) Engineer, to join a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists contributing to the safe and efficient realization of scientific objectives on the Z Machine. While opportunities to engage in myriad problems across Center 01600 exist, the principal focus of the selected individual will be the performance and continued improvement of the Z SoS as an important and dynamic scientific enterprise based around a one-of-a-kind facility. This role presents opportunities for sustaining and developing highly complex technical systems, engaging customers and stakeholders in the sustainment and improvement of multi-disciplinary systems, and ensuring the highest level of safety in all operations.

Department Description:
Department 01679, Z Pulsed Power & Systems, is responsible for the Z pulsed power driver capability in service of national High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) science programs. The department is composed of a team of scientists, engineers, and technologists working together to provide responsible stewardship of this important national asset.
In addition to the responsibilities for the Z pulsed power driver, Department 01679 is intimately involved with the concept of operations underlying the use of the Z facility as a unique scientific capability. A complex interplay of human and technological systems simultaneously must be efficiently facilitated and continuously improved, on both tactical and strategic timescales, in order to enable ever-growing capabilities in a broadly multi-disciplinary environment.
The Z Machine’s ability to generate well above 20 million Amperes with power in the hundreds of trillions of Watts enables research that provides critical data relevant to both non-nuclear components and nuclear explosives packages in partnership with LANL and LLNL as part of the NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship Program. Additionally, Z is active in fundamental science and fusion research and is an award-winning, internationally recognized experimental facility.
